Fairness. People Are INDIVIDUALS
As counter-intuitive as it seems to be talking about backlash towards white people one day after the 50th Anniversary of MLK's death, I can't say how happy I was to wake-up to this story in my Facebook News Feed this morning. How nice that the parent in question is a young Black Mother who knows Prejudice of ANY KIND is wrong?
As a child of the 60's & part of the 1st generation of school children to attend desegregated elementary schools, I grew up believing that this is the way it SHOULD BE.
The cultural values I was exposed to in Movies, in Music & in Pop Cultural included the notion of Bi-Racial Marriage in the brilliant romantic comedy "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" with Sidney Poitier & in his classic drama "To Sir With Love."
With the NUMEROUS artists of Motown, including Diana Ross & the Supremes, The 5th Dimension & Dionne Warwick - too many to name.
As someone who has lived this way MY ENTIRE LIFE, there are no words for the REAL BACKLASH I feel on a daily basis.
In August of 2017, I attended an online training via Webinar called "Daring Discussions." The sponsors of the training (all women) were very well-intended, "calm, cool & collected," - not at all bitter or angry, but the main thrust was White Supremacy in response to the (stolen presidency) of Donald Trump.
The truth is that ANYONE can be PREJUDICED - pre-judging people by any outwardly-visible characteristic - their appearance, how they look.
Prejudice towards women is called MISOGYNY or Sexism.
This is why we still need to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.
